Carvoeiro

Quick guide to Carvoeiro on the Algarve

There are several attractions in Carvoeiro that help to make it a popular tourist attraction within the Algarve area of Portugal. Both the natural beauty of the area and the history of the region help to make this municipality an interesting destination. Holiday property in Carvoeiro is increasingly in demand as many more people discover the delights of this area.

There is much natural splendour to take in when visiting Carvoeiro. One need only spend an afternoon on one of the area’s beaches to understand why this spot intrigued the ancient Romans so long ago. Located along the east coast, a few hundred metres from the main beach, is the attraction known as Algar Seco. This natural attraction illustrates the impact of waves over the course of centuries, as structures have been carved out of the coastal rock here. The most distinct feature of the area is the so-called water chimneys.

In terms of historical interest, Carvoeiro is home to the ruins of a fort built in 1670. This fort served as part of the Algarve area’s coastal invasion defences. A gate of the fort is the only part still intact.

In the same area of Carvoeiro, the Shrine or Our Lady of the Incarnation can be found. This is a monument that is said to have been built before the fort, with imagery that dates back to the 16th century. Of course, this site has undergone numerous renovations over the years.
