Quick guide to Tenerife

The largest and most populous of the Canary Islands, which lie in the Atlantic off the northwest coast of Africa, Tenerife is a fascinating island of diverse landscapes. Boasting Spain’s highest peak, the snow-capped Pico del Teide, rugged volcanic rock formations and spectacular beaches with volcanic black sand, Tenerife is an island of contrasts. Party animals will love the bustling resorts full of clubs and bars, but there are also quiet and charming towns, fantastic nature reserves and an intoxicating mix of Spanish and native Guanche culture.

Tenerife is a year-round holiday destination, with temperatures rarely dipping below 15ºC in winter or topping 24ºC in summer. There truly is something for everyone on Tenerife, which is far more than just a sun, sea and sand destination, although these are also here in abundance. Teide National Park has amazing views and dramatic landscapes surrounding the Pico del Teide, and children will go wild for the parrots and dolphins at Loro Parque or the Siam Park water park at Adeje.

Playa de Las Americas, Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje are the three main resorts, located in the south of the island. They have beautiful white sand beaches (imported from the Sahara) and are the liveliest areas of Tenerife, perfect for a younger crowd. For lovers of culture and a more authentic Spanish experience, the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife is an enthralling port with a beautiful tranquil beach, and Puerto de la Cruz is a smart town with a Guanche archaeological museum, many lovely cafes and venues playing live jazz and Latin music.
